food walk on wednesday june 30th, 2021
memphis is a united states city like no other. the outer neighborhoods such as germantown seem to be well taken care of and managed. walking into the city, the streets are quiet and the typical coagulation of traffic is absent. the closer we get to down town the more poverty there seems to be, but memphis is a city with a deep historical identity and is just east of the mississippi river. it is the place where dr. martin luther king was assassinated and where the musician b.b. king started his journey as a one of the greatest blues artist to ever do it.
the more we interact with the folks there, the more we realize that at the core of this city is an amazing community. we visit the only non-profit rock climbing gym in the country — ‘memphis rox’ — and learn more about their journey to providing an engaging and safe space for anyone who wonders their way. we also host a food walk and give out about 35 burritos to the houseless community in the downtown part of the city. another highlight is linking up with future doctor nicholas sapp, chauncey’s childhood friend, and learning about his journey through the world of science academia.
