little rock, arkansas

community clean-up on sunday july 11, 2021

we.grow.eco picks up trash with a few folks from the Keep Little Rock Beautiful volunteer network at Allsopp Park. altogether, we pick up over 400 pieces, which we then sort by category and upload using the “One Piece A Day” app.

after picking up, sorting, and documenting the trash, we discuss the importance of building a strong grassroots movement through community organizing to stop the introduction of litter into our ecosphere at the source: through changing our habits of consumption and waste, and halting the production of plastics by food and beverage companies in the first place. the locals share that the state of arkansas had just past, the week prior, a legislation that disallowed individual towns and cities in the state from banning single-use plastics, removing the decision from the hands of local people. this is why documenting our litter is so critical: it can be used down the road to push for regulation, legislation, and collaboration with those producing and allowing the production of single-use plastics and styrofoam.
